Pot Luck

So. Here I am again. You may have thought I disappeared or discontinued my blogging habit.

Fear not!

Here are a few "random thoughts" I've had brewing in my percolator lately:

1. Watching the entire olympic women's marathon is not "must see TV." I want a refund. Show me something with a little action, please! I'll even watch archery or trampoline or rowing! If any NBC execs are reading...pretty please don't make us watch the men's, too!

2. Michael Phelps has definitely been THE story for the first half of these olympics. I started wondering what the hype was like when Mark Spitz got 7 golds in 1972. I heard today that it was hype (as much hype as there was or could be in 1972 that is). I also wonder what Phelps will do with his celebrity / notoriety. I've heard words/phrases like destiny, fate, God made him for this, etc. I hope that in 10 years we'll be able to look back and say that winning 8 gold medals was good for him.

3. What in the world was Green Bay thinking? I don't think anyone really believes that they're a better football team without Brett Favre. I understand that it's annoying to have him retire and then un-retire, but please. He led them to a 13-3 record and one pass away from the Super Bowl LAST YEAR! You can't tell me they really think that Aaron Rodgers (as good as he may be) can surpass that in his first year as a starter.

4. I'm ready to get back to full-time ministry to children and youth! Over the past two summers, I've been filling the FPC pulpit while the other Revs have had sabbaticals. That's great and all, and I appreciate the chance to preach and grow in that area of ministry, but I'm SO looking forward to getting back to working with people under 20. You really have no idea.

5. I think I need to improve in the area of my attitude when I'm frustrated / disgusted. I'm beginning to be concerned that I let those emotions show too much / too easily. I'm going to be experimenting with being positive despite frustrating / ridiculous circumstances. I'll keep you posted.

6. I'm enjoying reading / digesting my friends' thoughts in their blogs! Keep 'em coming!

Until next time - RevPhil

Hey...welcome back...to blogging and to where your heart is at church. You are a great teacher to us adults but we all know that you rock with the kids.

Glad you're doing some self-examination and re-evaluation...there seems to be a lot of that going around lately! (myself included)

Looking forward to more Random thoughts....

As one of those "Revs" for whom you filled in while I was on my sabbatical-THANKS! It was great to know I had NOTHING to worry about if you were carrying the ball...

What's worse than just plain ol' marathoning? Marathoning in a restaurant with screaming kids! Yeah! Love it!!!

I have also wondered what Phelps will be like as the Olympic buzz begins to quiet down. Will he remain cool and mysterious or will he become like that guy who won the race and is now the world fastest guy from Jamica? (he acted like a complete baffoon bragging, yelling, being cocky! Ugghhh! That just gets me to no end!) It will be nice if Phelps can just kick butt and be honored that he did such a great thing. The olympics have been very good so far and you and Anna have given Brian and I the fever!

Finally, I must say, Phil, that you are a good guy. I always knew that you were but today you increased in your coolness. You let your wife take some time to go and do some personal things this afternoon. As her good friend, thank you for that. You did a good thing....I hope it worked out good Anna! You deserve it in a super-duper, psycho-cleaning, stay on a schedule kind of way. See you soon! Good luck this week. Back to the grind....

I spoke with 3 different people that had the same sentiment about 2.5 hrs of running. Although, it did give us time to get the kids ready and in bed before the phelps finalle. Machine. Phelps should be the good terminator in the T4 movie!!

so, what are your thoughts. They have been calling Michael Phelps the world's greatest athlete. Do you think so? Comparing him with Jordan, and Woods. What do you think?

I second the 'welcome back'!
1. I think boring is in the eye of the beholder. Note: I dozed off during beach volleyball, and CANNOT stay awake for late night viewing.
2. Phelps. If it was easy, everyone would have 8+ gold medals. Why can't reporters just report?
3.Green Bay. No opinion.
4.You filling the pulpit for the other revs was a bonus for some of us.
5.I am finding I have less patience with frustrating people/places/situations. I have been telling people lately, when I am aggravated, I become aggravating. I might have spelled that wrong. ARGGGGG!!! I could use a refresher course in being nice.
6.I am enjoying the blogs. Who knew?
7.On a frivilous note, I am BUMMED about the Harry Potter movie.

Ha! This is funny. We were both commenting at the same time. Talk about wave lengths...

I think Phelps has, without question, had one of the most amazing athletic weeks in history. And his 8 gold medals is an accomplishment that will most likely stand up for quite a few years, and may never be broken. We'll see about that.

I think he's definitely in the conversation as far as "world's greatest athlete." The thing you have to respect about Tiger Woods, Michael Jordan, etc. is that they have been consistently great over a long period of time.

Phelps has been great for the past 4 years, and he's been out of this world for the past week. After London 2012 I may be more ready to put him on the top of the heap.

P.S. I'm bummed about the Harry Potter movie delay, too. Don't they realize that those kids aren't getting any younger?

go on Google and read about Jim thorpe and compare the two as athletes.

What would be the Track & Field equivalent of the Michael Phelps accomplishments? Obviously, Michael swims the same distance a few times, just different strokes. Would Usain Bolt have to run the 400 and then the 4x200 and the 4 x400 to be considered as good an athlete as Michael? Or does simply crushing the 100 and setting the 12 year old 200 meter world records put him in that league?

Food for thought...
